I know the feeling. After a long think about it and some basic research, you have looked yourself in the mirror and said: “I want to sell essential oils”.
That is your niche.
You love them, you use them, you know enough about them to get an essential oils website off the ground. But the big question remains.
How to make money selling essential oils? There are a variety of ways to get started. You could use affiliate marketing to start out. You could sell them through dropshipping or start an e-commerce site that focuses on essential oils.
A variety of ways to get started.
We will take a look at some of these business strategies and try and come up with an answer for which is the best way to start out in the essential oils niche.
We will also have a look at some of the best resources needed for building your essential oils business and getting it started off the right foot. You can check out my review of my #1 recommended resource for building an online business to see if it might help you get started.
Is There Money In Essential Oils?
The first question we are going to need to answer in our essential oils business plan is or not there is enough money in the industry to support your blog, website, or e-commerce presence.
Almost as importantly, will there be a market in 2 years or 5 years so that the effort you put in now is not wasted?
The initial step is to do a little research on the industry itself and see where the revenue is headed and what the future looks like for essential oils.
Keep this in mind, you cannot accurately predict the future so the best you can do it piece together a reasonable scenario and work off that.
So the future of any niche could look great and then suddenly no one cares anymore. What you want to do is try and minimize that sort of thing from happening.
Reports like this one from Grand View Research (source) show a wonderful upward trend in the demand for essential oils. The forecast calls for year on year expansion for 5 or more years.
This is the kind of reassurance that you want to look for when deciding on a business plan for essential oils or any other niche.
One source might not be enough so check around for any industry studies that you can find. There are likely dozens out there for you to look at and get a picture of the overall health of the industry.
Now that we are satisfied with the health of the essential oils industry lets look at the search interest over time.
Search Trends and Interest for Essential Oils
A quick bit of research over at Google Trends gives us a fantastic picture of the search interest over the past 5 years for essential oils.
There has been a good consistent pattern since 2014. A definite upward trend that has continued until the present day.
You will notice some spikes at pretty uniform intervals. Those tend to be around Christmas and the holidays. That is something to keep in mind when you are crafting your content.
Essential oils get a nice boost during the holidays so creating gift based essential oil content around that time is going to be a good idea.
Keep this in mind, however. Your content needs time to grow especially if you are a new website. So writing and publishing your Christmas content the week before the big day is not a great idea.
Your content needs to be up and ready to go a couple of months ahead of time at least so that when people start searching for it your articles will have been there for a while and moved into their true SERP ranking.
It takes time for Google and Bing to get them where they should be. Google, in particular, can be slow with newer websites.
The Path Of Least Resistance
While there are many strategies on how to start a business in essential oils the easiest one for beginners is by far affiliate marketing.
With affiliate marketing, you don’t have to worry about customer support. Or inventory. Or any of the other headaches that come along with starting a new business.
Let’s get into just how to go about starting an essential oil business with affiliate marketing. The first thing you are going to need is a place to put your content.
For essential oils, I recommend a traditional written blog supported with Youtube videos and Pinterest pins. This will give you a diverse selection of mediums for your traffic generation and a static website that you can funnel all that traffic towards.
Now you could go with just a Youtube channel but I don’t think essential oils lends itself well to Youtube exclusively. Video reviews of your Oils are great, but they are not terribly engaging for your audience.
Adding in video reviews to your list of the 10 best essential oils of 2019, however. That is another story. That gives your readers somewhere else to go after reading your content.
Now you have engaged them twice and are starting to build that great relationship that is crucial for affiliate marketing. Add Pinterest into the mix and you now have another engagement source to move your traffic through.
You can also use Twitter, Facebook, and Instagram to help generate traffic but I found the Return on time invested to be much lower than Youtube or Pinterest.
Think about it.
Who goes back to check on a missed tweet? 5%. 10% maybe of the people on Twitter will take the time to go back and see what they have missed.
Pinterest and Youtube are search engines first and Social Media second. That is what makes them so useful. Your content stays and can be found years into the future.
Monetizing Your Essential Oils Website
There are 3 main ways to monetize an essential oils blog. Affiliate programs, Advertisements, and Info Products. Let’s take a look at info products first.
This monetization method can be great depending on the niche. In fact, in many niches, this is by far the most lucrative form of monetization. But I don’t think it works really well for essential oils.
You need to be able to create compelling content above and beyond what you put on your website and be able to sell it at a premium to your readers.
I just don’t see anywhere to get that kind of content in essential oils. There are no real training courses that you could do. That I can see anyway.
Bottom line is this, you will need to immerse yourself in the essential oils niche for a good long time to come up with a compelling info product that people will actually pay for.
That is about the only way to do it that I can see. Spend a couple of years finding exactly what your readers need and are willing to pay a little extra for and then built it as best you can.
The easiest and most passive way of monetizing any niche, including essential oils, is to simply place some ads on your website. This is not going to bring in any real money until your traffic gets to a decent level.
10k pageviews a month is where you might start seeing some decent money, 100 or so a month with the right advertisement network.
The point is that you will not see a significant income early on from ads. I recommend waiting until you get a few thousand page views a month before adding advertisements to your site.
Adding ads incorrectly or clicking on them will lead to your being banned from the ad service which can have a disastrous effect once you do start to get traffic and have no options for monetization. Be patient, build your essential oils community and wait till you traffic gets to a decent level.
In the meantime, you can use our last monetization technique to get started.
Affiliate Marketing Programs
As I mentioned affiliate marketing is the best way to get started for a new website. You don’t need a ton of traffic like ads. You don’t need to spend 1000’s on an info product. You just need content and traffic in order to get the ball rolling.
That is not to say that it is easy. It is just easier than some of the other methods. It still takes time and patience.
3 months is probably the minimum you need to start seeing affiliate marketing results. But most of the time it will take 3-9 months depending on the niche.
It can be done faster but many times that is from people who have been at it for years on different products and have it figured out already. Or they are simply full of it.
You’d be surprised how often you see someone claiming they made 800 bucks of ShareASale a week into their new website. Possible? Sure. Likely? Not A Chance.
Back to the issues at hand. you are going to need to find some great affiliate partners that sell the best essential oils brands in order to earn money from affiliate marketing.
Fortunately, I put together a list of 10 outstanding affiliate programs for your essential oils website.
There are dozens more that you can try and new ones pop up from time to time so always check back and see if we have updated the list and check the major affiliate networks for new opportunities.
Now it is just a matter of crafting compelling content that will rank and draw in traffic. Placing relevant affiliate links in your content and having your readers click on them and make purchases from your affiliate partners.
The concept is simple but it takes a lot of work, good content and some patience.
The Foundation for Your Content
Keywords will make up the bedrock of all your content. You will need to carefully select them in order to get the most out of the great content that you are going to write for your blog. But not just any keywords. You need long-tail keywords.
So let’s have a look at a longtails keyword, shall we? The first one is from the Jaaxy Keyword Tool. It is a paid tool. Here is a short review of it that I wrote.
Jaaxy also comes as part of the premium membership to Wealthy Affiliate, included in the subscription price. You can find discounts for the entire program here.
So the keyword I chose for this example is “the best smelling essential oil”. It is a decent keyword, more of an information keyword I would suspect.
Although it does have a bit of buyer intent to it. Someone is looking for the best of something they are probably looking to buy an item in the niche.
We get some great ideas for new keywords in addition to our main long-tail keyword for the article we want to write. But look at the suggestions.
You could craft a piece of content for the best essential oils for women or men or for the home. dig a little deeper you might find keywords for the best smelling oils for each room of the house. Dozens of content ideas from a single Jaaxy search.
Here is why these long-tail keywords are so crucial.
These are long phrases that have much less search volume but a great deal less competition associated with them.
Look at it like this. 10 Articles that only get 100 visitors per month that you can rank on the first page for is better than an article targeted with a keyword that gets 1000 views and you only manage to get to page 4.
SEO and organic traffic is a zero-sum game. You either make the first page of SERP’s or you don’t get traffic. Not enough to matter anyway.
So you target long-tail keywords. But you also get ranked for related keywords and phrases. Things you didn’t even know you were putting in your article oftentimes become a great additional source of traffic.
Reselling Your Own Essential Oils
Starting your own e-commerce store through Shopify or Wzone is another option for your essential oils business.
You can also try selling your essential oils on Etsy or Amazon FBA. Be sure to check with them first as essential oils can fall into a grey area from time to time.
Wzone is simply another way to do affiliate marketing. The difference is the focus is more on the products and making your website look like an e-store over a blog. You are still going to need blog content to get traffic to your site, however.
Shopify can be used with drop shipping, where you act as a middle man and help connect a supplier with a customer, with a significant price increase so that you make a nice profit.
The inherent problem with drop shipping is the delivery time, but if you are upfront with your customers you might be able to work around it.
Still, for a product like essential oils, I don’t think drop shipping is going to be a great way to go. I just include it in the article so that you know it is an option.
That about wraps it up. Whether you choose to build a Youtube channel or blog with affiliate marketing as the focus. Or a Wzone Amazon store. Essential oil is a lucrative niche to build your business in.
You could find the best essential oils to sell from home and craft your content to illustrate that to your readers. Just be honest with your readers and you will earn their trust and start to build a wonderful relationship with them.
