What To Look For In A Cat Affiliate Program

They’re basically five criteria that I look at when deciding on what affiliate program to use.

Some of the criteria are a little bit more important than the other ones but you really need to balance all of them out in order to maximize the potential of these cat affiliate programs or any partner programs for just about any Niche.

So let’s take a look at the 5 and then I’ll expand on a little bit after that.

  • Commission
  • Cookie
  • Products
  • Conversion Rate
  • Popularity Of The Product/Merchant

The Commission For Cat Affiliates

The commission is an incredibly important part of any affiliate program but it is not the only thing that is important when deciding on which cat affiliate program you want to promote on your blog or YouTube channel.

You should definitely look at the commission because there is certainly a lower base level that you want to be above, usually around 4%  or so.

Anything lower than this and you start to get into some territory where it’s not really worth promoting the products when the commission is that low.

There are of course some exceptions that real but generally you want to keep it above 4% and of course the higher the better.

Now the reason why the commission isn’t all-important is that in order to get that commission you need the rest of the affiliate program to really support you and your promotional material.

A 50% commission doesn’t do you any good if the products are selling are terrible and don’t convert with your particular audience.

And the products don’t even have to be bad in a lot of cases. It’s just that they don’t convert with your audience, we’ll discuss a little bit about conversions later on.

So it’s a balancing act.

You want to commission the tie enough to reward you for your time and effort in promoting that cat partner program.

But you also need a good enough cookie and conversion rate and good products in order to maximize the commission.

So when people look for a cat affiliate programs they start with the commission but I always recommend to dig a little bit deeper and match the affiliate programs with your specific audience.

The Tracking Cookies

Next up is the tracking cookie. what this does for your affiliate programs is give you a window of opportunity in which you can make a sale after someone clicks on your affiliate link.

This is often overlooked by most affiliate marketers but it is incredibly important because the longer the cookie the more chance you have of converting those link clicks into a sale.

This is true in the cat niche and it’s true in just about every other niche you can think of.

Ideally, you want to get something above 30 days but a lot of times you’ll see 15 or even 7 Day cookies and these can be all right depending on the type of product that you’re selling.

For cat affiliate programs 7or 15 Day cookies really not going to be a problem because you’re not dealing with super high ticket items in general.

You won’t need the extended amount of time that a 30 or a 60-day cookie would give you.

The basic rule of thumb is the higher the price of the product that you’re promoting the longer you want the cookie to be because as the price goes up the decision time extends longer and longer for the potential consumer.

Very rarely will you see cookies under 7 days but Amazon’s standard cookie is only 20 hours and it is notoriously short.

The issue is that Amazon is Amazon and they can do whatever they want because they are the biggest store on the planet and they don’t have to treat their affiliates well.

You can always use Amazon for just about any Niche. But, I always recommend finding Alternatives with longer duration cookies for a large variety of niches and especially for the cat Niche.

You can see in our list that  all of our cat affiliate programs have much longer cookies than Amazon and most are over 30 days which is great for this blogging niche.

The Cat Products Must Be Top Notch

Our next criteria might seem pretty self-explanatory. You want to promote the best products that you can possibly find.

The problem is a lot of affiliate marketers, especially new ones, look at the commission and not the products that they are promoting.

Nothing destroys your reputation faster than promoting bad products.

Yes, you may sell a few of them and make those Great Commission but over time it will diminish the trust that your readers have in you and your brand.

So you need to research the products that you were going to be promoting as thoroughly as you possibly can.

Ideally, you would like to get ahold of those products and put them through their paces and right thorough review of the products that you’re going to be promoting.

You can’t always get ahold of the products because of their price or any number of other reasons.

So you’re going to need to do a lot of research online and try and find the products that are popular and well-reviewed by your peers and by the regular consumers.

That way you can feel comfortable promoting them on your general pet or cat niche site.

The cat affiliate programs that we’ve chosen here today seemed to have some pretty good products and they should be good for you to promote.

However, you still need to go and do the research on your own to be sure that they are going to match up with your values as an affiliate marketer and with the interests of your specific audience.

I can’t stress enough how important it is to match the products with a specific audience. I don’t know your audience. No one knows your audience as well as you do. You are going to have to make the decision on which cat products are going to fit best into your affiliate strategy. Then determine which cat affiliate programs would be the best for you and your audience.

The Conversion Rate For Cat Affiliates

Conversion rate is one of those things that not a lot of people talk about when you’re just getting started in affiliate marketing.

But it is maybe the most important part of any affiliate program in any Niche, especially the very competitive cat or pet niches.

conversion rate is simply how many sales you make for a particular product or affiliate program.  it’s the number of clicks on your affiliate link divided by the number of actual sales.

It doesn’t matter what the commission is if your conversion rate is not any good. The only way to figure out what your conversion rate is is to run some tests on each product or affiliate program that you plan on using.

Now don’t get me wrong. Conversion rate is not the end-all-be-all of affiliate programs.

You still need a decent commission you still need a good cookie you still need all the other criteria that I’ve spoken about here today. So it’s always a balancing act between all of these various criteria.

But the conversion rate is Paramount.

You must have a decent one if you were going to make money in affiliate marketing.

Even if your commission is low at 4% or 5% if you have a super high conversion rate you can make tons of money with just that type of affiliate program.

Conversely, if you have a 50% commission and you have a very low conversion rate then you’re not going to make as much money.

At that point, it might be better to find another cat affiliate program that offers a lower commission but one that you can get better conversions out of.

It’s always a balancing act and for this particular criterium, you are going to have to run tests for your specific audience and choose what’s best for your overall affiliate strategy.

Popularity Of The Product/Merchant

The last criterium is also the least important in my opinion. This is simply the popularity of the product or affiliate program that you are going to promote.

The reason why it’s someone important is the more familiar someone is with a particular brand or product or Marketplace the more likely it is they’re going to feel comfortable spending money there.

So for a cat Niche blog, people might feel very comfortable with Amazon or Chewy or Petco or one of the big pet stores that are popular around the world.

But there are tons of smaller cat affiliate programs, as you can see by our list here today, that may not be as well-known as some of the bigger ones.

Usually, that’s not going to be a problem.

It’s just going to take a little bit more work in terms of crafting content that explain the history and the overall nature of the cat affiliate program that you want to promote.

In some cases though, it might take too much time and energy trying to explain or get your audience familiar with a particular affiliate program then it’s really worth.

Why would you promote an unknown pet store if their stock and products and commissions are the exact same as Petco or Chewy for example?

It just doesn’t make sense to try and shoehorn that affiliate program in when you have two large companies and the affiliate terms and products are exactly the same.

Always try and take the path of least resistance when you can.

When the other criteria are head and shoulders above one of the big stores it’s worth it to take some time to explain why you feel this partner program is going to be beneficial for your audience.

Maximize These Cat Affiliate Programs

You’ve got your cat blog started and now you’ve got a good foundation of affiliate programs to choose from to try and monetize all your great content.

The one last piece of the puzzle to really being successful in affiliate marketing is being efficient and avoiding mistakes.

Mistakes can set you back days months even years and extreme circumstances if you pick up a penalty from Google or other search engines.

So it’s incredibly important to not only be able to identify issues and mistakes before they happen but correct them as quickly as possible.

For a brand new affiliate marketer, this is going to be almost impossible because you simply don’t know what to look for and how to avoid the various potholes that pop up when you’re starting any type of business but especially a passive income online affiliate marketing business.

But there is a way to minimize the mistakes and make your business start as smooth as possible. You can’t eliminate all the problems but you can learn from others that have already gone through what you’re about to embark on.

The best way to do this, in my opinion, is to find some great affiliate marketing training that works for you. There are plenty of great ones out there and there are some terrible ones that you want to be careful about.
